After years of being called “Ma’am” by well-meaning service providers, Shelley Roth came up with the idea of leaving a “Tip Card” along with the usual monetary tip to inform and educate wait staff and other "customer-facing" personnel. This began an unplanned journey as Shelley realized that a simple tip card offering advice to avoid assumptions based on appearance was just the beginning. In Don’t Call Me Ma’am A Transgender Story of Living in a World Without Labels, Shelley shares the inspiring story of the journey from coming up with a simple idea to coming out as a transgender person. The hope of the story is to share a vision for a world with no labels; where human beings live with understanding, cooperation and acceptance and where who we are on the inside is not limited by artificial labels we see when we look in the mirror. Part autobiography, part memoir, part educational tips, Don’t Call Me Ma’am will speak to anyone who has ever felt limited, misunderstood or isolated by labels and to those who care about them. All proceeds from book sales go to www.glbthomeless.org helping LGBTQ youth. Shelley has been a life-long educator and nurturer first as a teacher and assistant principal, a successful salesperson, a social media navigator and author and now as a human being sharing a transformative transgender journey. Through sharing this book, Shelley aspires to educate those who don't understand transgender and are seeking more knowledge. Shelley hopes that whoever reads this book and hears a talk at an event or conference will learn through this personal story what a transgender person is, and more importantly on a higher level, realize how labels don’t define us and are not necessary for our souls to thrive. Shelley is the author of three previous books, Get Real, People! How to Use Social Media for REAL-ationship Marketing, Shedding Your Sales Shark Lessons from a Recovering Sales Shark & How to Apply Them in Social Media Marketing & Life and Give to Grow 9 Principles for Conscious Business, Social Media and Life. Don't Call Me Ma'am A Transgender Story of Living In a World Without Labels Shelley R Roth JCoby Wayne 9780983870463 Books Reviews
Book makes me want to chop my junk off
Reading this book helped me with perspective and being a little more aware of those around me. Knowing the struggle that Shelley had growing up and finally be brave enough to write this book for others. So that they can find their own voice and acceptance. Not from others but from themselves. My review isn't eloquent but I'm not a writer. I just know this story touched my heart.
I found this book to be a heartwarming story with practical applications on how to live my life in a more inclusive way being aware how people experience 'gender'. I feel it has the power to transform relationships with loved ones and new interactions that we face in an evolving and interconnected world. Highly recommend it!
Don't Call Me Ma'am is a beautifully written story and life experience of someone who is able to authentically share themselves with the world. While reading this book I was deeply touched by the author's ability to provide moments of contemplation for the reader as it related to how we live, be, and interact with ourselves and others in the world today. This book is woven together by rich life experiences and helps the reader contemplate their own authentic living in the world interwoven by threads of spiritual wisdom to help call for a more diverse and inclusive world. Thank you Shelley!
I purchased "Don't Call Me Ma'am" for a variety of reasons. Having been born and raised in Texas, using pronouns with everybody is the way I was taught to show respect. But with the changing times come new ways to address people in order to ensure everybody feels respected and comfortable.
Shelley's book achieves that and so much more.
Shelley's writing style is easy to digest. And Shelley puts so much of their own experience into the book that I came away not just understanding how to be more polite and inclusive, but also understanding the (admittedly foreign to me) idea that a person's gender identity may not match with their sexual biology.
Shelley's story is inspiring and powerful. Combine that with a person who has decades of experience in the business world, and I came away not only understanding how to be more polite and inclusive in my own business, but finding myself determined to be do so.
Shelley authentic style is infectious, and it makes their book a page-turner if there ever was one
I can't recommend "Don't Call Me Ma'am" enough!
Honestly written. Touching, candid and inspirational for us all to read and share! Kudos to the author for opening my eyes to a life without labels. Thank u for sharing your journey
Great educational, and touching, information on a subject that is new to many. I appreciate the explanations, word definitions and pics!I'd recommend this book to any Being who chooses personal growth. This book is one more teaching of how the habits of judgment continue to limit us individually and as a race. I always enjoy personal insight and courage as it inspires me!
