The person you pass on the street…may not be human.
They are known as the fatae, the various non-human species that make up the Cosa Nostradamus, the magic-using community. And they could be your neighbors, your teachers, your fellow commuters. Your local PI.
Meet Danny Hendrickson Mother, human. Father…not.
For the most part, Danny’s made his own way, straddling the line between human and supernatural in his job the way he does in his life
A man going missing isn’t — normally — a troubling case. Even when he disappears off a rooftop. But Danny’s new — and magical — partner sees something more in the scenario…and what she sees is deadly. To the client — and to them.
Promises to Keep Sylvan Investigations Book 2 eBook Laura Anne Gilman
"Promises To Keep" is the second volume (novella, actually) in the Sylvan Investigations series by Laura Anne Gilman, and follows on "Miles To Go." It continues the adventures of private investigator Danny Hendrickson and Ellen, who now have teamed up, with Ellen becoming his secretary-slash-assistant-slash-not-quite-apprentice as part of her training. Danny is the son of a human mother and a faun father, while Ellen is a Talent, one of the magic-using humans of the Cosa Nostradamus (familiarity with Gilman's CN-universe and her Retrievers- and Paranormal Scene Investigations series is not required to enjoy this series, for those new to her work). In this volume, they take on a missing husband case - but all too soon, their search for someone who suddenly disappeared from the roof while repairing it, gets complicated. In the recent past, he had been looking, without success, for a woman he had an affair with - but her trail ends at the maternity ward of a hospital. Suddenly, Danny & Ellen find themselves searching for an unknown baby who has also gone missing - and in direct competition with something winged, and big enough to have snatched a grown man off a roof. Will they be able to find the child before something bad happens to it?
I have the same quibble with this story as I had with the previous one: we start the story in first-person mode (as seen through the eyes of Danny), and then we suddenly switch to third-person as the camera focuses on Ellen. These abrupt viewpoint-switches are the literary equivalent of hitting an unexpected speed bump while driving. Either tell everything as experienced by Danny, or write everything in third-person. Besides this minor quibble, the story had a bit of a slow start before it picked up steam and had less of a noir-ish feel to it. Anyway, still a great read, and I hope Gilman will continue this series.

Promises to Keep Sylvan Investigations Book 2 eBook Laura Anne Gilman Reviews
Sylvan Investigations gets a missing-persons case. But things are never straightforward where the Cosa Nostradamus are concerned and so it turns out for Hendrickson and Shadow. Enjoyable story with quite a few twists and some heartwarming moments. And Ellen gets her first investigative assignment.
Sequel to "Miles to Go". Her Mentor, The Wren, having decided that working with Danny is good for her, Ellen is working for faun detective Danny Hendrickson, as his secretary/Girl Friday/apprentice. A client comes to the office to hire Danny on a missing person case. Her husband has disappeared from the roof of their Westchester home (he was checking the flashing on their chimney to see if it needed replacing). The husband and wife are both Cosa and Council, but not particularly high-res. In the middle of the case, which involves an affair and an unwed child, Ellen has an unrelated I-see-soon-to-be dead people vision. Danny and Ellen, separately and together pursue their goals, with Pietr of P.U.P.I. showing up to help out.
This is a novelette. It and its prequel are collected in a paperback that runs a combined 234 pages.
This was a nice short story and I would love it if Ms. Gilman would develop these charactors
into a new spinoff series. All of Laura Anne Gilman's novels have been great. I have 14
of her books on my Fire.
These books about half human PI Danny and his (I see dead people) side kick Ellen are just fun to read even when they are dealing with serious subjects. Danny can't stay away from any case dealing with a child and Ellen is trying to keep those people she sees in her visions alive. I hope that that the next two planned novellas are as good. I have already ordered my copies.
I am happy to read about a more confident Ellen. Boss-man will have trouble keeping up with her in the next book or two. I hope to see more of the Wren again also.
Book 2 in the series is a very will written entertaining mystery. The characters are interesting and well developed. The story line has substance and a satisfying conclusion. I would recommend this book too anyone who enjoys SI-FI. Enjoy reading
and this is why I don't really care to critique books, a book I may be luke warm about another reader may rave about. so, it's okay, I could put it down then pick it up again. I'd read the first book and was curious about the second. not thinking i'll be that curious about the third, if there is to be one. same characters, faun, talent, cast of not so good/not so bad guys. I did like the direlings, though I never care to meet any. try the sample.
